Lloyd replaced cup-tied Gill at right-half, with Fuce recalled to the forward line at outside-right, Richfield taking Lloyd's position at inside-right.

Wimbledon were confident of progressing to the next round, but it was Ilford that provided the early pressure and Haydock was bombarded with shots in the first twenty minutes, but he positioned himself well and rode his luck when Winder hit the foot of the upright with the goal at his mercy. Pratt had the ball in the net after a poor back-pass from Clark but the referee, after consultation, inexplicably ruled out a goal for offside. The home side started the second half meaning business. Turner made a marvellous save from a flying shot from Smith then needed two attempts to hold Neil's header from Laker's corner. A good passing move between Richfield and Laker was wasted when the latter shot at the keeper from five yards, then Lloyd hit the crossbar after several shots had been charged down. Laker made the break-though 23 minutes after the interval, collecting a long pass from the right, rounding Toase and lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. The lead only lasted two minutes, Blanche handled unnecessarily and Toase found Wilder with the resultant free-kick, he nodded it to R Smith who scored. With extra time looming, Clark hesitated and Winder found Smith who scored his second, the winner, with the last kick of the game.
