Nash and Eden were both injured, so Gill moved forward, with Clarke returning to the half-back line, and was joined by Meredith. Romford had beaten Tufnell Park by eight goals the previous week and, despite three of their regular team being selected for an Isthmian League representative game, their large following expected a win in the sunshine.

It was a remarkably fast game considering. Douglas was prominent throughout, feeding Meredith with accurate passing, but the winger was unable to find a good cross and inside him Gill was lacking pace as a forward. The Dons almost took the lead when Edelston just failed to reach a centre from Head, and it was the home side that looked more likely to score, but two dangerous free-kicks came to nothing. Solid defending limited Romford to only one real change in the first half, Olton eluding the backs but putting in a weak shot. Edelston and Meredith combined to set up Viard, alas his first time shot was cleared off the line for a corner.

Meredith had two chances on resumption. The first he tamely placed wide after a glorious centre from Gill, the second he made no mistake - Mortimer, who had played several games for Wimbledon earlier in the season, advanced to intercept Viard's cross, but was beaten by Edelston, Dennis' attempted clearance was headed in smartly from a narrow angle by the outside-right. Lemmer hit the post from a free-kick, the ball hacked up the other end where Oaks raced away and passed to Brookes who shot narrowly wide. Head then tested the keeper with a low shot and Douglas worked his way into a good position only to shoot over. Romford made strenuous efforts to equalise and the Dons had a lucky escape when Worthington shot right across the goal-line with Haydock beaten. In the closing ten minutes Romford had two goals disallowed, the first for offside and the second after Worthington clearly punched the ball in the net.
