Charlie Smith (2), Harry Stannard (2), Freddie Gauntlett, Jock Woods

An unchanged side made the short journey south to Kingfield for Woking’s final league game of the season.

Woking started off in great style, Pink hitting an upright with a ground shot in the first minute and Wiles missing by a few inches some minutes later. Arthur Parsons also made a neat save from Short following a corner and for the first eight minutes the Dons rarely advanced beyond the half-way line. In the Dons’ first attack Charlie Smith slipped as he trapped a centre from Jock Woods but he managed to get in a shot which tested Eastaff. Then Woods pushed the ball through to Harry Stannard, who got the defence in a tangle and coolly shot into the net in the ninth minute. A minute later Stannard ran through on his own and again beat Eastaff. This was a quick transformation and maintaining their superiority the Dons completely outwitted the home defenders. Eastaff turned a shot form Stannard for a corner and also saved from Smith at close quarters. Time after time the Dons were pulled up for offside, and passing which should have produced goals was spoiled by falling into the trap. Woking improved and the Dons were kept on the defensive for a fairly long spell. In one prolonged attack at least a dozen shots were charged down by the visiting defenders, who came out of the ordeal with honours and some good luck. Even after this Pink had a glorious chance of reducing the deficit when Wiles put him through. Parsons left his goal to challenge but the speedy winger eluded him and with an empty goal to shoot at he placed wide. It was an unaccountable miss. In the next minute the Dons increased their lead. Stannard worked to the right and, after drawing the defence out of position, lobbed the ball through for Smith to take it in his stride and tap it into the net over the advancing goalkeeper. Bird missed an easy opening before the interval, when the Dons lead by three goals to none.

Smith injured a leg and changed places with Gauntlett. Despite this, the combined effort of the pair brought another goal eight minutes after the restart. Smith got well down and centred for Gauntlett to head into the net. Woking rearranged their team, Clarke going to right-half and Warren crossing over to the other wing, with Macey moving to inside-left. The home defence appeared stronger for this alteration and for a time Woking had the best of matters. Pink, however, missed badly when he had a clear run for goal. Masey deserved to score when he shot against an upright. When the ball rebounded across the front of the goal Short banged in another shot which struck a defender and was deflected for a corner. These were two lucky escapes for the Dons, but when Stannard found a gap in the Woking defence he made to perfect opening for Smith to make the visiting total five. In the next minute Pink made amends for his previous errors and cut in to take a cross from Clarke and beat Parsons. Four minutes later Pink was let in when Lister floundered in the mud and he again scored. Encouraged by these unexpected successes, Woking piled on the pressure, and the Dons’ defence was kept extremely busy for a long spell. The Dons’ attack had lost its zip, much of their passing being aimless, but near the end Stannard gathered the ball near the half-way line and, although challenged by one opponent after another, he kept the ball under perfect control and passed to Woods, who completed to scoring. The margin of four goals did not do justice to Woking, but it must be agreed that the Dons snapped up most of the chances which came their way, and were the more skilful side.
