Rotherham produced a stunning fightback from two goals down to edge out Wimbledon at Millmoor.

They dragged themselves up by their bootlaces to equalise before the break and completed a remarkable comeback with a second half winner.

Wimbledon played their part in an excellent game that could have gone either way.

But it was the home side who finished the stronger, holding out for a deserved victory.

Shell-shocked Rotherham found themselves two down inside nine minutes after first being denied a penalty with only 25 seconds on the watch when John Mullin was tripped inside the area.

Referee Paul Walton waved play on and eight minutes later he gave Wimbledon a free-kick on the edge of the Rotherham penalty area for a foul no worse than the one he had earlier waved away.

Up stepped David Connolly with a perfectly flighted free-kick, curling the ball over the Rotherham wall and into the top corner.

A minute later worse was to come for Rotherham when Connolly pulled the ball back across the area to set up an absolutely unmissable chance for Jobi McAnuff.

But Rotherham fought their way back, with Rob Scott's long throw-ins causing real panic in the Dons' defence.

It was from one of these throw-ins after 17 minutes that Chris Swailes fired home from Alan Lee's header down.

If referee Walton denied Rotherham a penalty in the opening minute, he awarded them one in the 39th minute.

Darren Holloway was booked for his foul on Lee and Mark Robins put Rotherham on level terms with his 10th goal of the season when he netted from the spot.

And Rotherham really should have gone in at half-time ahead when Swailes missed an easy chance after 43 minutes and then Mullin brought a wonderful save out of Kelvin Davis with an excellent 44th-minute shot.

Rotherham continued to dominate immediately after the break and after 55 minutes Lee just failed to get a touch to Mullin's excellent cross in front of an empty net.

Rotherham's winner came after 76 minutes from central defender Martin McIntosh's volley after Lee headed down Chris Sedgwick's right-wing cross.

In a pulsating finish Lee thought he had wrapped it up for Rotherham when he beat Davis with his shot only to see Holloway clear off the line.

But at the other end McIntosh proved himself a hero again when he cleared off the line from Connolly with goalkeeper Mike Pollitt beaten.
