Next up was a trip to the John Innes ground for a game with old local rivals Merton, who had been playing regularly and were expected to give the Dons a tough game.

There was only one change from the previous week with newcomer Pettyfer, who had impressed in the trails, at outside-left in place of Mackay. It was soon apparent that Taylor and James had formed a fledgling understanding and the duo caused the Merton defence problems all through the game, as did Pettyfer on the opposite side. It was Pettyfer who scored the only goal of the first half and only a frantic leap across goal by the Merton keeper, Buchanan, prevented him scoring a second. Another goal was disallowed by the ref, D. Ellis, to the bemusement of the visitors. Merton had the better of the play, but the Dons defence marshalled them well and limited the number of shooting opportunities, however a knee injury to Coleman in the second half that necessitated the half-back being carried off the field (and never to wear the Dons shirt again) allowed the Merton forwards more space and they took advantage with two late goals, firstly Price following up a shot from Cox that Caius could only beat out, then Price again with a fast low drive that gave the keeper no chance. The visitors' forwards continued to look dangerous, and Webb was unlucky not to equalise, but it was not to be.

The match was played for the benefit of two groundsmen, Norris and Warwood and the collection raised £6 15s 1d.
