“Is It Fair To The Public?” asked the Wimbledon News report for this match, “The effort to complete the outstanding fixtures by May 17 has reduced football in this competition to a farce.”

With the exception of Haydock in goal the Dons team was made up of fringe, reserve and strollers players. To add insult to injury a group of senior players stood in a group near the main stand watching the game. The newpaper continued, “Spectator’s cannot be expected to pay admission fees to the ground to see such fare as was served up in this game.”
Oxford were also short of full strength, playing four reserves, but were markedly stronger in front of goal than the home side. They lead by 2-1 at the break, Dutch naval man Baaker scoring both their goals, the Dons goal coming from Maggs after good work from W. Cousins, brother of the first team Johnny.

After a reshuffle at half-time the home side actually created more opportunities than the visitors, but their efforts to convert chances into goals were so feeble that they eventually drew ironic cheering from the crowd. Two further goals from City via Adams was enough to finish the scoring.
