Isthmian League

Oxford City
?
1 - 1
Wimbledon
Freddie Gauntlett

An unchanged side made the journey to Oxford City for vital Isthmian League points, watched by an attendance of nearly 4,000.

Wimbledon pressed from the start and almost scored twice in the first ten minutes, both as the result of errors. Firstly the Oxford centre-half Walker completely missed the ball, but Stannard was caught by surprise and missed the guilt edged chance that resulted, then Oakey fumbled a shot that rolled out of his grasp but just wide. As the game settled down, both side had chances, Vic Bird forcing a save and then flashing one just over for the Dons. Harry Stannard swung over a cross that beat the keeper, but Stone got his head to the ball to clear.

The visitors started the second half without Ron Head, who was receiving treatment for an injury, and City took full advantage of their numerical superiority, Wheeler giving them the lead with a left-footed shot, and the same player then beat Jim Haydock only to see the ball crash back off the crossbar. Head returned on the wing and a ding-dong struggle ensued. Freddie Gauntlett got his usual goal, scoring with a low shot to equalise, and both Stannard and Gauntlett went close, the former’s shot smothered by Oakey, the latter’s shot edging just wide, but neither side were able to score again, and division of the points was a fair result.
