Isthmian League

Dulwich Hamlet
?
4 - 0
Wimbledon

The assembled press corps spent most of the build up calculating the decimals and working out the fractions, finally concluding that a win for either side would give them the title, but a draw would give Walthamstow Avenue the opportunity to sneak through if they could win their own final game. Should they fail, Dulwich would finish top with a superior goal average. Vic Bird returning up front vice Charlie Smith was the only change to the visiting team.

The first half was end to end, with the Dons doing most of the pressing, but they invariably finished badly. Connett gave Hamlet a goal advantage in the fourteenth minute with a low shot that left Jim Haydock helpless. Harry Stannard let loose with a shot that Freeman just scraped off the line and before the interval the keeper saved two headers from the same player.

Within seven minutes of the restart there was no further need for decimals or fractions as Dulwich Hamlet stormed the Dons’ goal and bamboozled the defence to the tune of three goals in four minutes. Green scored from a Brown pass, Beglan got the second and Davies took advantage of a slip to make the total four. Wimbledon had the majority of the play for the rest of the game, but could not spoil the party atmosphere. It was their first Isthmian League defeat since before Christmas and this was a most disappointing end to such a splendid run. Walthamstow, who also won their final game, finished second on goal average to Hamlet, Wimbledon trailing third a brace of points behind both.
