We've all heard the wartime story of players bringing their boots to matches in hope of a game. When Cook turned up with goalkeeper Gregory for the final game of the 1940/41 season the Dons were missing the Welsh Guards, Corporal Jones and Guardsman Williams, and when Stevens, Hambley and Sergeant Kelly also failed to turn up Cook and regular Clements were drafted into the team along with three players borrowed from hosts Dulwich Hamlet. It was his only appearance, and he scored!
