Barry started his career as a full-back at Charlton and progressed through their youth ranks to the fringe of the senior squad by the start 1962/63. After a short spell at Aldershot he joined Portsmouth in July 1964 where he made 17 first team appearances during the 64/65 season. Joining Wimbledon during their first Southern League Premier season, 1965/66, he made 91 appearances during three seasons there before transferring to Margate in the summer of 1968. He made only a single appearance in the Margate first team before cutting his leg in a reserve team fixture in November 1968, which caused him to collapse a few days later with tetanus. After a spell seriously ill in a Tooting hospital he was forced to give up the senior game, and after a spell playing Sunday football retired in 1970.

Barry's friend from his Charlton days, Mike Bailey, by then captain of Wolves, appealled to the PFA who thereafter they ensured all players had tetanus injections as a matter of course.
