Desperate for a striker, Joe initially appeared on the Club's radar when Mike Everitt tried to take him and Trevor Pearce on loan from Aldershot in December 1972. Pearce was actually named in the expected line-up for the match against Burton Albion, but the deal fell through and Joe finally signed for the Dons during the following close season.

Was later youth team coach at Brentford and ran a holiday apartment business, also general manager of Swanage Town & Herston and a director of Exeter City.
