Mike joined Wimbledon as a youngster after playing for Chelsea's youth team and worked his way up through the Dons youth team to the first team and gained three England Amateur caps and an Amateur Cup winners medal.

He signed professionally when the club joined the Southern League in 1964, but after a couple of seasons was replaced by Frank Smith after he collided with a post in an Eastern Professional Floodlight League defeat at Bedford and, when he failed to get back into the first team, left for Queen's Park Rangers.

Like several others, Mike was an engineer with the Post Office, but after passing his F.A. Preliminary Coaching Badges he took a full time football coaching position with the Greater London Council.

After four years at QPR he spent six years at Birmingham City and a season as player-manager of Minnesota Kicks before retiring from playing to coach.

After a spell as assistant manager at Plymouth Argyle he took the manager's position in 1977/78 but resigned after nine months. After assistant manager roles at Fulham, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion he became England's goalkeeping coach, working through two World Cups, then took a similar role with the Swiss national team. He then joined Roy Hodgson as goalkeeping coach at Fulham, and followed him to Liverpool where he stayed until Hodgson's departure.
