As a youngster with West Ham, in the same Colts team as Bobby Moore, Terry played for England Youth against Hungary in 1956 and in the 1957 FA Youth Cup final against Manchester United, but only played once for the first team - a friendly against Sparta Prague in October 1958.

He was released at the end of the season and quickly signed for Orient, scoring directly from a corner on his début. Played 20 times during the O's one season in the top division - scoring an 89th minute winner against Manchester United in September 1962.

After 7 seasons and over 150 appearances was given a free transfer and turned down a move to Newcastle United to join Reading in May 1965, but after a few months was sent off for using bad language and failed to return to the first team.

Joined Wimbledon at the start of the 1966/67 season, but faded after an impressive début and requested a transfer towards the end of the season before being released at the end of the campaign and joining Folkestone Town.

Retired from playing to run a number of betting shops but continued to coach schoolboys at both Norwich City and Orient.
