Reported to have played for a Football League club during the war, Rhodes was thrust into the first team on the back of a ten minutes kickabout trial, then scored within three minutes on his debut, adding a second later in the game.

His strike rate was reasonable, but in a side struggling to win games, and he was soon dropped.
