Bob Wright
(1931/32 - 1936/37)
Not to be confused with the unrelated JK (Ken) Wright. Both played together in the same team on several occasions.

Centre-forward James Walter, inexplicably known as Bob, made his first team debut aged just 16 in the 1931 Boxing Day friendly against Nunhead and scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory, but had to wait in the reserves before he got another chance, and it wasn't until the 1936/37 season that an injury to talismatic Harry Stannard gave him the opportunity to lead the line regularly.

Just shy of 6' tall, he learned to play at Clark's College, Putney, where he gained a place in the Middlesex Boys XI.

While waiting for a first team spot to open up at Wimbledon, he spent a season at inside-right for Tottenham Hotspurs' A team and thereafter signed amateur forms for Arsenal, playing in several midweek games.

He was offered a professional contact at both Arsneal and West Bromwich Albion, but preferred to remain amateur, representing Surrey Juniors and the London F.A.

Also played cricket for Hounslow and took part in tennis, swimming and running.

Bob joined the London Rifles Brigade in the Second World War, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, but was killed in action in Italy in June 1944.
