Full-back "Ronny" was a sailor with the rank of Able Seaman, and he played regularly for the Royal Naval Depot based at Chatham. Spotted by Gillingham, he signed for them as an amateur, and made a solitary appearance in the Football League Third Division South for them, a 0-3 defeat at home to Coventry City on 29 March 1930.

He then joined his hometown club, Grays Athletic, but was soon on his way to Athenian League Redhill.

He joined Wimbledon at the start of the 1931/32 season, helping them to their first Isthmian League title, even playing a match in goal against The Casuals in December 1931 when Ted Whisker was delayed by fog, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory. Most of the following season was spent in the reserves, and in the close season he left the Dons he joined Finchley, where he had already helped out at the end of the campaign. There he won the London League and represented the League and Middlesex. He was still playing for Finchley when the Second World War broke out.
