A centre-back, after playing for at Plough Lane for the winners of the Section A final of the Wimbledon Charity Cup, Price's Athletic, at the end of the 1937/38 season, he impressed during a pre-season Blues versus Whites trial game at the start of the following season and was in the first team for the opening game of the campaign, soon earning the nickname "Pop".
