Phil Handford
(1984/85)
The hard-tackling, 5'6" midfielder was spotted by Gillingham as a 15 year old while representing Sittingbourne and he joined them as an Associate Schoolboy before signing as an Apprentice Professional in June 1980. He made his debut in January 1983 and played 37 times for the Gills, scoring twice.

Phil's transfer from Gillingham in 1984 was only the second time that Wimbledon were involved in a transfer tribunal. The figure decreed was £5,000 with a potential additional £2,500 in add-ons.

A short stay with the Dons was punctuated with a loan spell at Crewe and he spent the following summer at KPT in Finland before drifting into the local Kent non-League circuit. Later became assistant manager at Welling United before dropping out of football.
