Having attended Tolworth Secondary School, Malcolm Robbins came to Plough Lane while still a teenager. Able to play at half back or in the forward line he never quite fulfilled his early promise after his early appearances were limited when joining the Royal Engineers for National Service.

Was playing for Tooting & Mitcham in 1955/56 alongside Norman Williams and later joined Epsom & Ewell in February 1958 where he stayed until 1961/62.
