Previously with Oxford City, full-back Simms joined the Dons at the start of the 1927/28 season.

He became a teacher in 1932 after University.

Vernon served in the RAFVR, training lads to fly at the ATC in Mitcham. He also had ties with the Spitfire League in the war (in which Len Earl - son of former Don Alf Earl - played), and set up various football teams.
