Represented Sussex and Brighton Schools at football and Sussex at cricket, Mike joining Lewes in the Athenian League while working as a factory setter after leaving school.

After a year he joined Brighton & Hove Albion as a full-time apprentice, signing professional forms when he turned 18.

Released by Brighton after a season he joined the growing contingent of South Coast players at Wimbledon at the start of the 1971/72 season, after an unsuccessful trial at Reading.

He spent the season competing for the full-back berth with Mike Everitt and Peter Shreeve, and was released at the end of the campaign, joining Tonbridge the following season.
