Having played for various army units before being de mobbed in 1947 he was persuaded to join Wimbledon by his younger brother Harry who was in the club's junior side at the time. It did not take him long to make the left half position his own and he was a member of the first team for almost ten years and winning representative honours for Surrey, London and the Isthmian League.
As half back he was popular with the crowd who appreciated his full blooded tackling and powerful shot. For many years the team's penalty taker and free kick expert, by the mid 1950s he was appearing regularly in the team with both his younger brothers - Joe and Harry.
In the autumn of 1957 the three brothers, who between them given 27 years of service to Wimbledon FC, announced they were leaving. In a joint statement they said; 'We are leaving because we are not happy with the club. Our decision has not been reached on the spur of the moment. We have been thinking about it for months. The club has been part of our lives but our family is very clannish and when one of us is unhappy it affects the others.'
When he left Plough Lane the storeroom supervisor was 30 years old.
