Michael Folivi got in behind the Dons defence and fired home the opener from 10 yards out. Wimbledon’s efforts weren’t rewarded until first-half injury time, when Alfie Egan latched onto a flick by Dan Ano, but was brought down in the box by Andrew Eleftheriou. Ano stepped up and calmly sent Watford keeper Andrew Thomas the wrong way to make it 1-1.

Wimbledon went for it right from the start of the second half, but failed to really test Thomas. Later, the Dons failed to deal with a cross and Max Makaka steered the loose ball home. Wimbledon responded instantly, and their pressure paid off when a deep corner was flicked back by George Marchant and Egan rose superbly to head home.

With no goals in extra time, it came down to penalties. Seanan McKillop, Ano and Nathan Wood all made no mistake, and Wimbledon keeper Will Mannion saved a spot-kick from Watford’s Charlie Rowan. When Judah Chapman’s effort was saved by Thomas, Watford were still in with a chance, but Williams-Bowers made no mistake to earn a 4-2 shoot-out win for the Dons.
