Jack Midson opened his goalscoring account as the Dons eased to victory in their second pre-season warm-up, this time against Blue Square South opposition at the scene of manager Terry Brown’s first promotion as Wimbledon manager.

The gulf between the two clubs since they met at Wheatsheaf Lane in a Ryman Premier playoff final just over three years ago was evident as a new-look Dons side romped to a 4-0 half-time lead. With Luke Moore absent, Brendan Kiernan delivered another eye-catching performance in support of the front line. There were a few changes to the starting line-up that beat Fulham three days before: Polish trialist Szymon Sidorowicz came in at right-back, and Lee Minshull at centre-back; Sam Hatton moved to right midfield, and Rashid Yussuff also slotted in.

After just six minutes Chris Bush was effective on the left wing and provided a ball for the dangerous Christian Jolley to put the visitors in front from close range. After 12 minutes the score was 2-0. From another ball in from the left, Minshull - in trademark style near the post - had time to direct his headed effort from the right. Captain Jamie Stuart prevented former Dons striker Richard Butler from pulling the trigger on the half-hour, but Wimbledon had more goals in them before the break.

Midson’s first came from the penalty spot on 31 minutes as he stroked the ball into Staines keeper Shaun Allaway’s net after a handball was given in the area and a yellow card brandished in the direction of the home side during the aftermath. Five minutes later, the former Oxford United striker scored his first Dons goal from open play, comfortably tapping in Jolley’s pass. Wimbledon could have added more before the break, but a rogue pop-up pitch sprinkler going off unexpectedly seemed to halt the Dons in their tracks just before the referee blew for half-time.

The other two trialists, goalkeeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz and forward Bas Savage started the second half, along with Reece Jones, and Brett Johnson took the captain’s armband from Jamie Stuart. By the hour mark, Wimbledon had a completely different team to their starting line-up, Terry Brown giving some much needed run-outs for several squad players. A poor back-pass allowed Kiernan in to deservedly net after 52 minutes, and new Staines signing David Wheeler rifled home a consolation goal after 64 minutes.
