AJack Midson penalty moved AFC Wimbledon a step closer to securing their status in League Two and shocked play-off hopefuls Southend.

Former Shrimpers loanee Midson squeezed his second-half spot-kick under Daniel Bentley's body after Kwesi Appiah had been brought down by John Egan.

Appiah had almost opened the scoring before the break but was denied from close range by a fine Bentley save.

Southend rarely threatened and defeat ends their run of three wins in a row.

Phil Brown's side are now just one point above eighth-placed York.
