Sunday's visit to Maidstone United saw the ladies continue winning form, at the impressive facilities at the Gallagher Stadium.
On a 3G pitch perfect for free flowing passing football, the Dons could play to their strengths, utilising the surface for their normal pass and move football. Within the first twenty minutes AFC opened up the home defence with five clear cut chances, and only good goalkeeping kept the Maidstone goal un-breached.
Halfway through the first half, and a rare mistake from Dons keeper Tylee, gave the home team a clear cut chance, only for their striker to blast it wide of the goal. Inflated from their miss, and against the run of play, it was the home side that opened the scoring. Striker number 10 Alice Phillips, broke the offside trap and volleyed home after 32 minutes.
Unperturbed by the opener, the Dons continued to control the game, and created more chances, only for Maidstone's Keeper Emma Hogben to deny the visitors. However on 37 minutes, a good move down the right hand side, saw the ball move quickly from full back Martin, into strikers Wylie then Bisson, and Dons midfielder Rebecca Sargent blast a 25 yard shot passed the Maidstone keeper.
With the scores level and a half time team talk focussing on a few basic points, the Dons started the second half in exactly the same way they finished the first. On 58 minutes Dons striker Keady saw her shot fumbled by Hogden, and the AFC Ladies took a well-deserved lead. Four minutes later Keady reacted first to a Suchley corner, to double her tally, and reinforce the Dons advantage.
The Dons were now in complete control of the game, and played with freedom, on a surface best suited for their game. Another move starting from one of the rampant Dons full backs, this time left sided Clarke, involved striker Keady, resulted in the goal of the game as midfielder Hoesli-Atkins volleyed home from 25 yards out, well out of reach of Maidstone's Hogben.
A rare lapse in concentration, saw Maidstone substitute Shannon Redhouse give the home side some hope with 4 minutes to play, and in stoppage time Maidstone again scored as Alex Witham struck the back of the Don's net.
Don's manager Lyons summed up his side's performance, "Maidstone are a decent hard working team, who have already taken points off us this season, and caused problems for other teams in the top four. We knew what to expect, and I'm pleased we came away with the three points. It was a surface that enabled us to play good football, and some of our passages of play were exceptionally good. When you consider the chances we created, and the form of their keeper, we were unfortunate not to have scored many more goals today. Another important factor for us was to see our goals come from other areas of the pitch. Emma, Jordanne and Sarge took their opportunities well, and their goals came from well worked moves.
"Caz Bisson had a tricky game, and was up against two centre backs who tried to keep her quiet. She had to change her play today, and despite the attempts to keep her quiet, she still hit the bar, and had another chance denied by their keeper. As always, her work rate and patience today was very good, and with Maidstone focussing their efforts on her, this enabled our other players to create chances. I was also especially pleased with the performances of our two fullbacks, Clarke and Martin, who gave us a lot of overloads with their support play. Their involvement had a direct impact on our first and fourth goals. I think today you can see how strong our squad is, and although we have one or two areas to learn from, all in all we are very happy with the three points and how everyone performed."
