Romford, newly elected to the Isthmian League, proved faster and more dynamic of the two teams and ran out easy winners in Essex. Head was forced to miss the game, sitting in the stand with a poisoned arm and Fuller was unable to get away from military duties, but Clarke returned to partner Parsons at the back and McGuire, who had scored four goals in six appearances the previous season, lead the front line. Romford's first time passing and shooting game was far too good for the Dons right from the start and they were a goal after five minutes, a flashing shot from W Bridge beating Cains. Just five minutes later and it was two, Clarke handling unnecessarily and Oakes converting the resultant penalty. Wimbledon quickly pulled one back, H Bridge punting back forward a Romford free-kick to McGuire who crossed for Meredith to score, and for a while the game evened out, but Romford regained the initiative and their two goal lead before half-time, breaking out from defence for W Bridge to cross to Adams, who's early shot caught Cains out. |
