F.A. Cup - 2nd Preliminary Round

Sutton United
?
7 - 0
Wimbledon

Cains and Chandler paid the price for the previous week's heavy defeat, and seven of the anticipated squad of thirteen, including both goalkeepers, were unavailable for one reason or another, leaving the committee scrambling around to put a side out. Unwins, formerly with Sutton, debuted in goal, as did Jewell at centre-forward, McGuire was forced to play at the back and Alec Fuce, having played for the reserves the week before in his first senior game since the start of the War, stepped into the attack.

Hence it came as no real surprise that the makeshift outfit fell to the Dons heaviest defeat in twenty years. Even so, for the first twenty minutes, despite playing against the wind and with the sun in their eyes, the visitors suggested enough that they might get something from the game. Indeed, either side could have scored before Sutton finally set the score rolling, Vaughan firing home Crisp's cross. Wimbledon rallied, but good work from Pratt allowed Crisp to score United's second before half-time.

Any thoughts of a comeback were extinguished immediately after the break when Vaughan again beat the Dons defenders to a cross from Crisp. Fuce tested Caffyn with a shot that the keeper grasped at the second attempt, but this just appeared to sting the home team into life. Vaughan's hat-trick came from Pratt's cross and Young added the fifth after Unwin could only parry a Pratt shot to him. Vaughan completed his own personal triumph in the closing minutes, taking advantage of Bridge's error to score his fourth, then running through a demoralised centre-back pairing to score his fifth and Sutton's seventh.
