Haydock returned from his representative sojourn to take his place in goal, and Fuller was back at the back. Douglas, an amateur on Chelsea's books, replaced Fennell at right-half. The front line had a new look, with Neil and Fuce injured and replaced by Jim Nash, finally demobbed, and Ron Head and Eden, recommended by a supporter who had seen him playing Army games in Germany, preferred to Richfield after impressing in a couple of reserve team games.

It only took seven minutes for the Dons to take the lead, Harper fumbled a shot from Head and Eden followed in to open his account. Four minutes later and the advantage was doubled, Nash firing home with a left-foot drive after a corner from the opposite wing. Woking soon pulled one back when Wride headed in a long forward pass from Lawrence. Thereafter the visitors continued to press the Woking defence and, apart from a couple of breakaways, which Haydock dealt with, it was only a matter of time before Wimbledon increased their lead. Lawrence twice cleared shots from Eden off the line with the keeper beaten, but he wasn't to be denied and, just before the break, he scored from a Viard centre.

After a promising start to the second half from the Dons, Woking got the upper hand and kept Haydock busy. Wimbledon's defence was struggling with the fast movement through the Cards' wings and Wride and Stocker both had good chances. Haydock was finally beaten when Wride turned a cross from Reeves towards goal. He reached the ball, but was unable to stop it entering the net. Two minutes later it was all square, Reeves beating three players before shooting with a smashing shot. The home side continued to attack until almost the end, but Wimbledon had one more chance in the last minute when they broke away with a nice passing move, but Nash put the final shot just over.
