Nash and Eden were both injured, so Gill moved forward, with Clarke returning to the half-back line, and was joined by Meredith. Romford had beaten Tufnell Park by eight goals the previous week and, despite three of their regular team being selected for an Isthmian League representative game, their large following expected a win in the sunshine. It was a remarkably fast game considering. Douglas was prominent throughout, feeding Meredith with accurate passing, but the winger was unable to find a good cross and inside him Gill was lacking pace as a forward. The Dons almost took the lead when Edelston just failed to reach a centre from Head, and it was the home side that looked more likely to score, but two dangerous free-kicks came to nothing. Solid defending limited Romford to only one real change in the first half, Olton eluding the backs but putting in a weak shot. Edelston and Meredith combined to set up Viard, alas his first time shot was cleared off the line for a corner. |
