Semi-final hero Harry Stannard was forced to miss the game, recovering from a knock picked up on the tour of Holland and resting to ensure he was fit for the big match the following week, his place was taken by Alec Fuce and Tom Laker, who had missed the Easter trip, had recovered sufficiently from a head injury received in training to resume in place of the unlucky young Dave Walker.

Wimbledon had the better of the early exchanges and Laker’s mettle was tested by two fouls against Wallace, then a move involving the entire front line resulted in a chance that Nash shot weakly into Letham’s hands. Nash almost made amends with a cross that Edelston headed inches wide with the keeper well beaten. With half an hour to go there was no indication of what was to come. Isaacs go Romford’s first, flicking the ball over Lemmer’s head before volleying the ball past Haydock and the same player then smashed in a 40 yard free-kick in off the under-side of the bar.

When Isaacs put Williams away for the third only seven minutes into the second half and, with the big game only a week away, it was no real surprise that the visitors were not at their best in the second half. Isaacs completed his hat-trick midway through the period, and the game turned into one long Romford attack, by the final whistle they had added a further two goals through Williams and Brooks.
