With Stannard on continental tour with the F.A. and Clark and Head unfit it was a patched up eleven that took the Dons last chance of a trophy to Champion Hill. Digweed filled the vacant spot in the half-back line and the forward five comprised, from left to right, Johnny Cousins, Sandy Jones, Pat Edelston, Jim Nash and Tom Laker. Wimbledon had by far the better of the first half, keeping Kingstonian pressed back in defence almost the entire period, and deservedly took the lead mid-way through when Cousins headed through. The same player had Barham scrambling to clear at the second attempt with a shot following a clever headed knock-down. Three goals in eight minutes either side of the break was enough to seal victory for K’s. Haydock was to blame for the first, allowing a soft shot from Watson to creep past him, but the second was worthy of the name, Henderson tricking the defence before firing in well out of the reach of the keeper. |
