National League side Gateshead reached round two of the FA Cup as they upset League One outfit AFC Wimbledon at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Two tiers and 57 places separated the sides, but Kain Adom put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes.

Fenton John doubled the lead early in the second half to hand the Dons just a second defeat in nine matches.

It was the Heed's first FA Cup win over EFL opponents since 2000 - a first in 11 attempts - and only the second time in 10 seasons that Wimbledon had fallen at the first hurdle.

Riley Harbottle almost gave the League One promotion hopefuls an early lead after a majestic run, but his shot from outside the box was just wide.

Johnnie Jackson's Dons remained on top until the 20th minute when the visitors broke with incredible speed, allowing Adom to burst through on goal and give his side an unlikely 1-0 lead.

Alistair Smith was picked out on the edge of the penalty area as the half progressed, but his effort was well saved by Tiernan Brooks in the Gateshead goal.

Five minutes after half-time, Harry Chapman forced an excellent save from Nathan Bishop following some superb distribution from the visitors. The rebound fell to John, who blasted the ball into the top left corner to double his side's advantage.

In the 79th minute, Smith was picked out unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box by an Aron Sasu cut-back but his close-range shot went wide of the right post.

Brooks came to Gateshead's rescue moments later when he tipped Danilo Orsi's header over the crossbar.

He produced another excellent save to deny Orsi in stoppage time and secure an impressive 2-0 win for his side.
