For the third meeting of the season between the two local rivals, Webb came in for Bridge. Pre-War player R Meredith, who had been playing for Carlisle, was home on leave and joined his brother Kenneth in the front line for their first game together since they were at school and what would be their only first team appearance together. Parsons thus returned to the back line in place of Corke.

The Dons were on the attack right from the start and K Meredith, McGuire and Taylor all tested the keeper in the early stages, however it was Merton who took the lead against the run of play when Cains could only help Burry's corner into the back of the net. Although Merton looked dangerous on the occasional break it was essentially the Dons forwards against the Merton defence for the rest of the half. McGuire came close, heading McGuire's cross against the bar, then Snook pushed a shot from K Meredith around the post and punched out a cross from Taylor which McGuire returned over the bar. The home side finally drew level when Lemmer converted a penalty given for handball.

The play in the second-half was a little more even, although the Dons still had the attacking edge. Snook was called on twice early on to clear from R Meredith and Taylor and Ford cleared off the line twice in succession when Snook was stranded in a scramble. Merton were to prove the old adage that it goals that win games by taking their chances when Wimbledon were wasting theirs. Fishlock broke through and centred for Cox to score and near the end another cross from Fishlock was turned in by Bower. Wimbledon continued to dominate and McGuire almost surprised Snook with a long range effort, but Merton held firm for the win.
