Head, back from injury, replaced the departed Hillman in the only change from the previous week's victory, as the Dons took on the eventual league winners in front of a large crowd. Mortimer was stuck in traffic and only arrived as the teams were waiting to enter the arena, with Head selected as his last-minute replacement, however he changed in lightning quick time and received a standing ovation at the end after several brilliant saves kept the score respectable. A deluge just as the teams came out left the players uncomfortable and the greasy ball difficult to control on a sticky surface, but Wimbledon defended stubbornly and, when Richfield moved inside, caused enough problems to the visiting backs that they might have got something from the game on another day. Walthamstow, described by the Wimbledon News reporter as 'The best amateur team I have seen for many years', won on the day with two first half goals. Wright got the first, a left-footed drive from ten yards out, and all five forwards combined in a passing move that enabled Groves to add the second. |
