Wimbledon put a difficult 1945 behind them with a resounding victory over Leytonstone at Plough Lane. Fuller returned to the back pair in place of Clark and Fennell made way for Smith to resume in the half-back line, with Neil returning to centre-forward after injury. An early goal, the first of four in the first half, set the Dons on their way. Just five minutes in Blanche's free-kick expertly found Head and his well directed shot found the net. Smith had a couple of long-range efforts well saved before Viard added the second when played in by Neil after twenty minutes. The third came five minutes later, good midfield work putting in Stone, who made no mistake. Head set up the fourth just before the break, easily beating the Stone's right-back and slamming the ball into the centre where Neil was waiting to crash home an unstoppable first-time shot. |
