Douglas returned from his representative trip abroad to replace Fennell and Parrott, who had also played in Holland, surprisingly came into the side at left-wing in place of the injured Head, with Laker moving to inside-left. Up against the League champions, the Dons held their own in the first half, once they'd weathered an initial flurry. Ten minutes in, Parrott broke away but shot just over and Day was later forced into a good save from Stannard's header from a corner. Avenue broke the deadlock when a long ball found Jennings, Haydock could only parry his shot and Davis was on hand to turn in the rebound. The visitors were not downhearted and Nash, Stannard and Edelston were combining well, with Laker making many good runs, and from one of these the scores were levelled. The winger tricked past both Lewis and Oliver and crossed for Edelston to head home. Wimbledon had the wind in their sails at this point and Burchell cleared off the line from Stannard after Day was caught out of position and the same defender deflected a shot from Parrott around for a corner. At the other end Jennings could have given the hosts a half-time lead, but shot hastily wide when clear on goal. |
