With Pat Edelston still injured Alec Fuce was preferred to Maurice Richfield, playing outside left with Harry Stannard moving to the centre-forward role. Johnny Cousins was selected in place of Frank Lemmer, but with Len Cannon unavailable he moved into the back line with Lemmer continuing at right-half.

In the first half, with a strong wind behind them, the Dons' forward line struggled to get their passing game going in the final third. Even so, Stannard forced Kitchener into a clearance and Head smashed the ball against the foot of the post. Casuals should have scored when Gage beat Haydock to a through ball, but shot wide. Head hooked a shot the hit Weir, the keeper was unable to gather the loose ball, but Cambridge scrambled it clear, thus the first half ended goalless.

With Clark and Cousins marshalling the back line Wimbledon slowly gained the advantage in the second half and the forwards coped far better playing into the wind. Head had a shot that travelled along the goal line before going wide, then Gage latched onto Collins cross and Haydock was forced to turn the shot around for a corner. The visitors peppered the goal with shots, but the keeper was in fine form and there was only fifteen minutes to go when the Dons finally made the breakthrough, Fuce cut out to the left and beat two opponents before passing to Head. Weir came out and blocked the initial shot, but Head was following up and scored easily.
