Cannon was unavailable, so Len Wallis stepped up from the reserves for his debut and Nash's return meant the forward line was restored to full strength. St. Albans had only managed three points from six matches, but the three coach-loads of visiting supporters could never have expected what was to unfold at Clarence Park. The Dons' forward were rampant from the first attack after only four minutes, Stannard crossing for Head to open the scoring. Nash put in a shot that the keeper pushed onto the crossbar, Edelston's follow-up was charged down and Head put the rebound over. Twenty-five minutes in Stannard cleverly controlled a long throw from Douglas with his right and shot with his left, Hobern saved at the expense of a corner, but Laker headed in the kick. The home defence switched tactics to the offside trap, but Wimbledon worked it out quickly enough and put in several more |
