Cannon returned at the expense of Wallis, else it was the same team that demolished St. Albans City the previous weekend. The large crowd gave the players a rousing welcome to the field and were obviously expecting another heavy victory against a side that had failed to record a victory in its opening nine League games. It was a game of two distinct styles, Wimbledon's short passing game contrasting with the Casuals swinging passes from wing to wing. For almost half an hour both sides stumbled on reaching the defensive line and the keepers were rarely troubled. The visitor had the best chance, but Hoare mis-kicked in front of goal after Gage's cross had found him clear. A shot from Stannard beat Cousins, but Cambridge cleared off the line then, with the half-hour mark approaching, Edelston broke down the left and his centre found head, who drove the ball into the net at tremendous pace. Three minutes before the interval Stannard latched onto a cross from Laker and increased the Dons' lead. |
