London Senior Cup - 1st Round
Plough Lane

Wimbledon
Harry Stannard (3), Les Birkbeck, Pat Edelston
5 - 1
Woolwich Polytechnic
?

Birkbeck, previously with Dulwich Hamlet, and Jones, formerly with Woking, were given a chance to impress after good performances in the reserves, at the expense of Nash and Douglas, however an injury at home to Head meant an instant recall for Douglas up front against the London League champions, who came with the reputation of good cup fighters.

It took a while for the home side to get going, but once they had the result was never in doubt. Woolwich should have opened the scoring but Whiteland put Gray’s cross over the bar then Laker did the same at the other end from Edelston’s centre. Magill latched onto a pass from Stannard and forced a good save at the second attempt from McDonald, the ball fell to Birkbeck but his left foot drive was just over the bar. The same player beat the keeper with a shot that was headed off the line by Farrer. Although the visitors looked dangerous on the break the Dons were always in charge and Stannard put them in front after the Poly keeper had failed to clear a high shot from Lemmer. Edelston then put in a shot that forced the keeper to ground and Birkbeck followed up, but his shot was deflected for a corner by Brown. The keeper was injured and his place taken by Webster for the remaining few minutes of the first half.

The recovered keeper dealt with shots from Birkbeck, Stannard and Laker at the start of the second period, but was unable to stop the home side increasing their lead when a long clearance from Cousins fell to Edelston who passed between two defenders for Stannard to run onto and score. The roles were reversed two minutes later and Edelston put the Dons three goals clear. With the game effectively over the keeper decided against any further punishment and left the field for good. Soon after a mistake by Jones and Wallis let in Morgan and with twenty minutes left the visitors had their consolation goal. Stannard got the fourth to complete his hat-trick from a pass from Lemmer, and then Laker hit the post with a fine shot. The stand-in keeper then dealt with shots from Lemmer, Stannard and Edelston before Birkbeck got his debut goal, Stannard, Laker and Edelston all combining to set him up for a left foot drive that concluded the scoring.
