Wimbledon, lining up with their cup final team, scored twice in the first eight minutes and strolled to an easy victory in the warm sunshine to maintain their unbeaten home record. Stannard created the first, racing to the touchline and crossing for Edelston to score easily after only five minutes. The second, two minutes later, was one of those bizarre moments that goalkeepers want to forget; West was fast off his line and beat Stannard to a through ball, but dawdled and the forward stole it off him and had an empty net to score into. West was also to blame for the third goal after twenty-five minutes, coming out for a corner but beaten to it by Head who looped it over him towards goal, Edelston was on hand to make sure it went in. And that was pretty much it, as end of season malaise kicked in early and the second half turned into a party for both the fans comprising one of the smallest crowds of the season, and player alike. A good time was had by all, and the players entered into the spirit, chance after chance being created only for the forwards to send the ball hopelessly high or wide with only the keeper to beat. Even with Magill injured in the dressing room for the last twenty minutes the Dons monopolised the game and should have scored another half a dozen goals. |
