Surrey Senior Cup - 2nd Round

Corinthian-Casuals
?
5 - 2
Wimbledon
Reg Neil
Switched to away (Kingstonian)

With work on the perimeter fence not quite complete this Surrey Senior Cup tie was switched to Richmond Road, home of Kingstonian and their tenants, Corinthian Casuals. Tom Laker returned to a shuffled forward line in place of Stone, otherwise the team was unchanged from the previous week.

The game was played in real cup-tie fashion and the Dons went for it from the off, taking the lead after only three minutes when a Neil pounced on a poor attempted clearance from Viard's centre. The passing game of Neil, Head and Richfield caused the Casuals problems and should have lead to further goals, but the next two goals went against them. A free-kick from Bunyan near the half-way line, assisted by a strong wind, found Sinclair only a few yards out and Haydock had no time to react to his header. Another free-kick, this time twenty-five yards out, was cleared, but Punnett deceived the keeper with his returned shot and Wimbledon went into the break a goal behind.

With the wind and sun in their favour, it was expected that the Dons would make something of the game in the second half, but soon after re-starting Head was injured and played as a passenger on the wing for the remainder of the game. Even so the equaliser was not long coming, a scramble in the goalmouth lead Couchman to clear the ball against his own man and directly into the net. The parity did not remain for long, as Thornton tested Haydock from close range and the keeper could only parry the ball to Sinclair. Appeals for offside were dismissed after the referee consulted his linesman. From this point onwards the Casuals dominated the game and added two further goals through Boardman.
