Bob Meredith, a regular for Carlisle during the war, who had been guesting for Notts County in previous weeks, was a surprise selection for the Dons. He had recently been 13th man for Wales in the amateur international against England. Brother of Ken, Bob had played a handful of games for Wimbledon since 1936. As it transpired he played instead for County at Q.P.R. and was never seen in a Dons' shirt again. His place was taken by his brother, while Hillman replaced the injured Fuce for his debut. Great things were expected from Hillman, who had been playing for Custom House, but it turned out to be his one and only game for Wimbledon as he had been called up for service and departed for Malta soon after the game.

The Dons finally gained their first win of the season with a markedly improved performance and a touch of lady luck, almost throwing away a four goal lead. The home side meant business from the start, Ugle ran onto a pass from Lemmer to open the scoring and five minutes later Hillman added the second from a Prett centre. Wycombe's McCullum had a goal disallowed for offside before Meredith increased the lead from Richfield's cross and a corner from the same winger was finished by Prett for the fourth. Wimbledon forced three consecutive corners and had several more chances before half-time, but remarkable defending from the Wanderers kept the score from increasing further.

The visitors shuffled their pack for the second half, and for a while they pressed, but the Dons regained control and with fifteen minutes left their four goal lead was still secure. Wycombe's rousing finale started then, with a breakaway goal from McCullum. The same player then fed Avery for the second and when Blakeman reduces the arrears to a single goal soon after the Wimbledon defence was rattled. In the final few minutes both McCullum and Vickers, chancing his luck from left back, hit the crossbar and, with the light fading, Fennell handled in the area and a penalty was awarded. Mortimer saved well from Rouse and the kicker reached the rebound first, but put it wide and victory for the home side was sealed.
