The Probables team from the previous week formed the majority of the side for the opening fixture, with Haydock preferred in goal over King and Douglas, playing the return fixture in Holland for Wandsworth (alongside Parrott), replaced by Fennell. Between three and four thousand fans turned up to cheer on the locals and they were rewarded with another game with double-figure goals, and only the inspired keeping of Kingstonian's bespectacled Desborough and a shaky start by Haydock at the opposite end kept the difference between the two sides respectable. Haydock was responsible for K's taking a two goal lead in the first ten minutes, firstly sending a goal kick straight to Stevenson, then letting a long shot from Grimwood slip between his hands into the net. Cannon soon reduced the arrears from the spot after Edelston was bundled over, but Stevenson restored the visitor's advantage, beating Haydock to a poor back-pass from Clark. Desborough made good saves from Head and Stannard, and when Head finally beat him Grimwood headed clear. Just before the break Edelston dummied a pass from Head and Stannard turned it in. |
