Pat Edelston returned from injury, Fuce dropping out and Stannard moved outside, and Len Cannon took the place of Jack Fuller at the back for the Dons visit to Kingfield The supporters club arranged three charabancs, carrying nearly 100 fans to the game, all hopeful of seeing their favourites progress to the next round of the F.A. Cup. They need not have worried as they outclassed their hosts, who had beaten Isthmian League champions Walthamstow Avenue a fortnight previously. Cousins had his hands full with Reeves early on and Head forced a save at the other end, before the visitors took the lead. Nash took a corner which Douglas flicked over his head for Laker to fire home. The lead only lasted three minutes, Reeves placed a shot in which was going wide but Cousins, attempting to head clear, deflected the ball into his own net. Captain Lemmer had to console the youngster with a pat on the back. Further consolation came soon after at the other end when Laker made progress down the wing and his cross was flicked on by Head to Stannard, who made no mistake driving it into the net. Just before the break Woking again equalised when Smith cut left and put in a shot that Cannon cleared, but Reeves was following up and headed home. The game was held up for some time when Freddie Douglas collapsed and a doctor summoned. He was carried off to the dressing room on a stretcher and played no further part, Nash taking his place in the half-back line. |
