Nash was once again unable to turn out, and Fuce made way for returning captain, Frank Lemmer, with Laker switching to the right wing and Walker moving into the vacant position created on the left. On paper it should have been a comfortable victory. The gulf between the two teams was as expected, but the margin of victory was down to the Park keeper, Ivey, who was on top form. A scout from Queens Park Rangers was in the crowd, watching Cousins. The visitors made a lively start, but ten minutes in Laker's cross was handled by a defender and Lemmer placed the Dons in front. They should have increased the lead when Edelston headed through Stannard, but the forward over-ran the ball. Stannard then set Head free, but he shot wide with only the keeper to beat. The north London side took advantage of the profligate finishing and equalised with sixteen minutes on the clock, Simpson beat Haydock to Cousin's underhit back-pass to score. It only took seven minutes for the home side to regain their lead when Edelston took a pass from Stannard on the run and gave Ivey no chance. The same two players combined but Stannard hit the post from only a few yards out, although he appeared to be well offside. |
