With Leytonstone involved in the first round of the F.A. Cup, a point for Wimbledon or a victory for unbeaten Romford would be enough to take them to the top of the table. Wimbledon were again able to select an unchanged team.
Despite a heavy pitch that was liberally covered in puddles down the Plough Lane side, both teams managed to provide decent football for the spectators. Romford were on the attack from the start and the home goal had two lucky escapes in the first quarter of an hour when shots from Williams and Allen were deflected for corners. Romford then had an escape of their own when Laker, who had earlier landed face first in the mud, crossed for Edelston, but his header bounced back off the bar.
Stannard should have opened the scoring in the second half when he raced through to within five yards of the goal, but he hesitated in shooting and was bundled off the ball by Isaacs. The challenge forced him to exchange places with Nash and the latter then provided another chance for Edleston which again crashed against the bar, Stannard putting the rebound high. Head and Laker then moved the ball forward and the former sent in a stinging shot that the keeper could not hold, Stannard nipped in and pushed the ball towards goal, but Letham rolled over and pulled the ball back. Stannard immediately claimed the score, but after the referee waved play on a scrimmage resulted with the keeper lying on the ball and the official halted play. Several of the Wimbledon players surrounded the referee claiming the goal and an excited spectator vaulted the fence and made for the official to give him a piece of his mind, but he was intercepted by Lemmer and Edelston and escorted off. The beleaguered middle-man then re-started the game with a drop ball when only Romford's players were in position. Romford then had a chance of their own but their centre-forward left the ball behind in the mud when ten yards out, leaving Haydock to run out and collect the ball. He was charged by Bridge and a free-kick was given which was placed long and Head dribbled through and put in a low shot that Stannard jumped over, but the Romford custodian recovered to dive and turn the ball around the post. Soon after Laker also forced a corner. The crowd were then much amused as Douglas, revelling in the mud, was forced to change his shorts while Laker waited to take the corner. Nash was then injured in a vigorous tackle as he turned Douglas' free-kick towards goal, but Stannard was sufficiently recovered so they swopped back to their original positions. Letham required two attempts to stop a shot from Laker, conceding yet another corner and the game finished with a final effort from Romford that failed to find the target.
