With Edelston confined to his sick-bed with influenza Head took on the responsibility of leading the forward line, Douglas moving forward alongside him with Scotsman Bill Magill stepping up from the reserves to make his debut in the half-back line. Wimbledon were unlucky not to take the lead against the reigning League champions when the ball rebounded off the bar to Stannard who set up Head but he could only direct his shot wide. Douglas also shot wide when well placed and Laker lobbed the keeper but Lamprell raced back to clear and the same forward shot over following a corner. At the other end Insole and Shergold both tested Haydock. The home side pressed for long spells, but were unable to break down the resolute Avenue defence. |
