Jim Smith was preferred at outside-right in place of Norman Smith, otherwise it was the same team as the week before that took the field in search of further Isthmian League points, for what turned out to be one of the most remarkable games seen at Plough Lane in many years. This time it was the Dons who were first out of the blocks, Green opening the scoring after four minutes after a nice passing move between Magill, Smith and Stannard allowed the latter to provide a decisive cross. Ten minutes later Stannard’s shot hit a defender and Green was again on hand to convert the rebound. Only four minutes more had passed when the Dons got their third, Smith heading Gauntlett’s corner onto the bar and Stannard latching onto the loose ball and giving the keeper no chance. Wycombe, without a point in their previous games, appeared dead and buried, but they pulled one back when Birdseye shook off three defenders before smashing the ball past Haydock and their spirits increased immeasurably. Stannard was unlucky to rattle the crossbar with a shot before the Wanderers further reduced the arrears through McCullum. |
